What should I check before driving away?
- Existing Damage: Take a video or photos of all scratches and dents before leaving the rental lot.
- Fuel Level: Most agencies use a “same-to-same” policy (return it with the same amount of fuel you received).
- Pro Tip: Use Google Maps for navigation, but be wary of “shortcuts” it suggests in rural areas—they often lead to roads intended only for motorbikes!
Is it difficult to drive in Bali?
It can be challenging for those used to wide, orderly highways. Expect:
- Narrow Roads: Many “shortcut” roads (gangs) are barely wide enough for one car.
- Motorbike Density: Thousands of scooters will weave around you from all sides.
- Ceremonial Processions: You may occasionally be stopped for 15–30 minutes while a religious procession crosses the road. Patience is the local law.
Which side of the road do they drive on?
Indonesia drives on the left side of the road. The driver’s seat is on the right.
How does the "24-hour" rule work?
Most rentals operate on a strict 24-hour clock. If you pick up a car at 10:00 AM, it is due back by 10:00 AM the next day. Late returns often incur hourly fees (approx. IDR 50,000/hour) or a full extra day charge if more than 3 hours late.
Can I take the car off the island?
Generally, no. Most standard rental agreements strictly prohibit taking the vehicle to neighboring islands like Java or Lombok. Doing so usually voids your insurance and may trigger a police report for theft.
